Breed Introduction
Strong, sturdy and strikingly aristocratic, the Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the most beautiful Swiss working dogs that were used as cattle drovers and guard dogs. They are gentle, loving, affectionate, well-mannered, eager to please, outgoing and people-oriented who love to be involved in all aspects of family life, making wonderful companions. Berners become closely attached to their families, especially with children and will protect them if needed. They also get along well with other household pets if introduced from an early age. Berners are lively, alert, intelligent and loyal. Not a noisy dog, but will bark to announce the arrival of strangers. They need to be trained and socialized at a very young age. Some members of this breed can be dominant with other dogs.

Will a Bernese Mountain Dog be a suitable dog for my family?

- As long as your back yard is securely fenced (not invisible fencing)
- You have a minimum of 1-2 hours total per day for the feeding, exercising, training, and grooming of your dog
