This video covers the different types of treats or baits you can offer your dog while training him. Treats are used for 2 purposes. First is knowns as luring or baiting which is holding the treat in your hand and moving it around in front of the dog to guide him into doing a command. Second is rewarding where you use some kind of treat to let the dog know that he has done a good job. Rewarding always comes after the dog has successfully done a command. Remember that for non-food driven dogs, other rewards such as praise or clicker should be used. Training treats that have strong smell should be preferably used for training. Soft treats are better for the purpose of luring. Training treats should be small enough for the dog to finish in 1 or 2 bites. When it comes to reward, there are several different kinds of treats you can offer a dog such as clicker reward, training biscuits and training sausage.
How to Handle a Dog
This video covers how to handle a dog while training. You should be aware of the training tools you will need: training treats, a standard 6 feet leash, a flat collar and a 20 foot lead. Always keep your dog on leash while training. Avoid places that have too many distractions. Bring the dog to you. Never go towards the dog. Make sure you put the leash under your foot to ensure your dog cannot move much and put the excess lead on your right hand. Give the command only once. Make up your own corrections if your dog doesn’t listen to you. When the dog first responds to your command, reward him. You should use 3 different voice tones for training: a tone for giving commands, a tone for correcting and a tone for rewarding. Your tone of voice should be loud, clear and firm while giving commands. Never reward for negative behaviour or lose control of the situation.
Reasons for Training A Dog
It’s important to understand why you’re training a dog. There are several reasons: teaching him to be a polite canine, preventing and correcting behaviour problems, creating a strong bond with your dog, travelling with your dog and so on. Training also helps kill boredom. You’ll be proud of owning a well-trained and obedient dog. Training will help you become confident with your dog and make the dog respect you. Remember that the dog learns only in simple steps so training should be broken down into several stages and each stage is built on the skills you taught your dog previously. Any kind of dog training should be a positive experience for both of you and that’s the main reason for training.
